Popcorn: the Perfect Snack Food

Did you know that popcorn has more healthy antioxidants than many fruits and vegetables? In fact, the hulls on popcorn actually have the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber than almost anything else. The levels of polyphenols rivaled those in nuts and were up to 15 times greater than whole-grain tortilla chips. It’s also the only 100% unprocessed whole grain. One serving of popcorn will provide more than 70 percent of the daily intake of whole grain.

Like many other foods, you can damage the healthy goodness of popcorn by adding things that aren’t so good for you, like butter and salt. Air-popped popcorn has the lowest amount of calories and is best for you. At Angels for Life, we have found a brand we love called Skinny Pop Popcorn that has only 135 calories for 3.5 cups. We get it at AJs Fine Foods, but there is an 800 number you can call to find out where it is sold in your area: 1-888-5-POPCORN.

Of course, popcorn shouldn’t replace fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and other nutrients important for good health that are missing from popcorn.

Among the other services offered by Angels for Life, we are licensed food handlers and can prepare healthy meals and snacks for our clients… especially for seniors. As we grow older, our appetite often decreases, so it is important to tempt the taste buds whenever possible. We like nothing better than popping a bowl of popcorn and sitting down to enjoy a movie with our clients!

Outings: We Put the Fun Back in Life

Victims of accidents and senior often find their mobility restricted, whether physically or simply because they are unable to drive. That doesn’t mean they should be locked up in their homes all the time. Not being able to get out and do things is one of the major causes for depression.

Angels for Life is all about putting the fun back in our clients’ lives. We love taking them on outings as much as they love getting out. By way of example, one of our female patients loves to grocery shop. At home, she is a very mild-mannered woman. But, at the grocery store — watch out as she takes CHARGE with her grocery cart!

Our caregivers enjoy all sorts of outings, big and small, including:

  • Walks in the park
  • Seeing a movie
  • Going out to breakfast, lunch or dinner
  • Getting ice cream on the spur of the moment
  • Going for a drive
  • Siteseeing
  • Shopping of all kinds (clothes, food, holiday, whatever!)
  • Talking a walk around the block
  • Going to the pet park
  • Seeing a concert, play or show
  • Going to church
  • Visiting a museum or the zoo
  • Checking out books (AND audio books) from the library
  • And so much more!

In addition to outings, Angels for Life offers non-medical caregiving and senior care in the comfort of your own home — wherever home may be (home, hospice, assisted living, independent living, VA etc.) —everything from shopping to transportation, personal care to companionship, meal preparation to light housekeeping and everything in between.

Reacher Grabber Tools

Mobility is often a problem for seniors, victims of accidents or injury and for post-operative patients. Bending down to grab something that has fallen on the floor or that is located high on a shelf may be nearly impossible. Reacher grabber tools allow people to reach high or low places and are even extremely useful for someone in a wheelchair. Not only do reacher tools help prevent injury from bending or falling, but they also give a senior, injury or accident victim a sense of independence — they don’t have to call the caregiver every time they need something.

Reachers and grabbers are long poles (3 feet or so in length) with a claw on the end and a trigger grip. Depressing the trigger causes the claw to close on items like books, socks, shoes, medicine bottles and more. We’ve even seen one talented senior put her socks on using her grabber tool!

There are literally hundreds of brands and types of reachers and grabbers on the market — including models that fold up for convenient carrying. These items can be purchased online or at most pharmacies.

However, reacher tools may not provide all the help needed. When that happens, consider calling in professional in-home caregivers like us. Angels for Life offers a wide-range of non-medical, in-home care, including personal care, transportation, light housekeeping, grocery shopping, meal preparation, companion services, pet care, medical referrals and more. Our clients include seniors, post-operative patients, victims of accident and injury, respite patients and more.
